Welcome to the The/La Collaborative’s Skills Articulation and Literacy Tool!
SALT is a self-paced, formative instrument designed to build competency and literacy through reflection and mentoring.
SALT focuses on the human and social skills that are essential in all contexts in which we work, learn and collaborate.
SALT specifically targets users’ “foundational skills”.
Foundational skills such as creativity, problem-solving, intercultural competency, and effective communication are “soft”, “human”, and “transferable”. They allow individuals to learn, adapt and thrive in work environments. They feed into the development of all other specialized, technical and domain-specific competencies, and are crucial to design thinking and innovation.

SALT’s foundational skill taxonomy captures the skills employers perceive as crucial for career success. Users are made to reflect on the degree to which they successfully practice behaviors associated with specific skills. In the process, they increase their ability to articulate and communicate the skills they have and build their capacity to identify the skills they can develop further.

Skills articulation and skills literacy are the groundwork of social and emotional intelligence, and they contribute to increased levels of the foundational competencies needed to contribute to inclusive innovation and collaboration in professional and academic settings.
